OPTIMISATION OF LENS CONSTANTS FOR CATARACT PROCEDURES

Different intra-ocular lenses are used during cataract surgeries, and all these lenses are unique. Accurately predicting the result obtained with the use of every lens requires analysis of hundreds of procedures and optimisation for the software calculations. Dr. Hartog has analysed the results of all the lenses he uses, and this greatly improves the success of lens replacement surgeries, especially so for those patients that have a big spectacle error.

THE RESULTS OBTAINED WITH MULTIFOCAL INTRA-OCULAR LENSES

Dr. Hartog has implanted hundreds of multifocal intra-ocular lenses. The accuracy of the calculations were evaluated, as well as the success of achieving spectacle independence. Patient satisfaction was evaluated using a questionnaire, that provided the patients’ experience of the visual result obtained with the multifocal intra-ocular lenses. This knowledge and experience is very useful for patient counselling.

EVALUATION OF ASTIGMATISM AND THE SUCCESS OF ITS TREATMENT

Astigmatism is a spectacle error caused by the front of the eye. With astigmatism, the cornea is shaped more like a rugby ball, than the optimal round soccer ball shape. It is important to correct the astigmatism during a lens exchange or replacement procedure in order to provide spectacle independence. Dr. Hartog evaluated the success of his cataract surgeries, as well as the different ways he corrects astigmatism. This provides the basis for further refining of the results.

Dr. Hartog is continually evaluating the success of his procedures. Research provides the basis for further improvement, and Dr. Hartog has presented his research both locally and at international congresses.
